Task Time Management Guide

The general time management questions were discussed in the Dynamic Time Management guide so here we focus our attention on how to save the time and achieve the good results.

To be specific, let us use as the task example the buying a good computer. This is a difficult task because the computers are the complex devices. It gives us the opportunity to discuss most of the task time management caveats.

On the other hand most of us buy the computers from time to time. If you are going to buy the computer this page will be useful for you also as the buying guide. The links in the top left corner of this page allows quick selection from the "top best" laptops, desktops, gaming computers and media centers computers. This guide explains why it should work.

Setting the time limits for the task

Since the work usually consume all the allocated time the first measure to save time is to set the time limits. As for the task it should not be longer than a week. If the task is longer, it is, actually, the project and it should be divided into several tasks.

Should you do it yourself?

The best way to save time is to let other to spend it for you. So consider to delegate the task if you can.

Should you use other people experience?

Most probably yes unless you did the similar task before many times and not long ago. If you successfully did it just one time it does not mean that you became an expert. May be you was just lucky. If you did it long ago, your experience may be obsolete. Therefore consider to allocate some time to study other people experience before you begin. Here we mean the published sources: documents, books, Internet sites. If you are a new member of the company or the team you may also save the great amount of your time asking simple education questions, for which many other members knows the answer. Again, set the time limits. Studying other people experience saves your time since you reuse their time; however the studying process consumes your time.

Should you look for the expert opinion?

It would be great, but for the experts the advising usually is their "bread" so as a rule you or somebody else has to pay for the advice either directly or not.

Another common problem with the experts is to find the real one. Let us take the computer as an example. To be the expert the person should have experience of the modern computers from several manufacturers. Moreover he/she should work sufficiently long with each of the computer to estimate the usability. To check the reliability the expert should test several computers from each manufacture and again sufficiently long. Do such people exist in nature? Well, probably, there are few in large companies whose job is to study the competitors but they are difficult (i.e. long) to find and they are probably not allowed to share their experience of the competitors.

So it seems that there are no experts in the computer buying except for the user opinion and we should search not for the experts in the computers but rather for the experts in studying the user opinion. In other words we need the results of the professionally performed poll. The poll should include the thousands of the participants, because to have reliable opinion about just one brand you should ask about one hundred people and better one thousand. More over the questions should be carefully worded to get the real opinion and avoid the response bias. It is clear that such a poll is very expensive. All the "polls" that we were able to find in the well known computer magazines and free Internet sources used opinion of few, often just one expert and we believe that such polls cannot give the reliable result.

Instead of the poll we decided to study the number of people who search for the particular brand in Internet. It is not simple, but less expensive than the poll and as we believe gives the qualitatively correct results. We determined the most popular computer among the Internet searches and presented our results here so you could quickly buy a good and reliable computer (see "Top Best" links in the top left corner of the page).

The best or the good enough?

Certainly the good enough. Actually to save time consider deciding what is the good enough result at the beginning. The point is that the best is unreachable limit. You may spend time infinitely and still have what to improve. The best have sense when we compare several results. But even the best result always can be made better.

For example in our "top best" rating we can determine the best in the sense of the number of people who searched for the brand. However if you buy computer from this brand we cannot claim that it is the best. We hope, however, that it will be good enough and as was discussed above this is the only realistic goal.
