Downloading and Installation for Beginners
These instructions use as example the downloading process for Your Voice Reminder. They assume that you use Windows XP with Service Park 2 (SP2) and Internet Explorer. However, for other software, browsers and version of Windows the process is very similar so this tutorial is useful for other cases also.Print Instructions

Downloading is the process of copying a file from one computer to another across the Internet. When you download Your Voice Reminder from this web site, it means you are copying file yvrs.exe from Vadim Motorine's web server http://www.friendly-ware.com to your own computer. Running yvrs.exe allows you to install and use Your Voice Reminder on your own machine. Files that end in .exe are "executable" files that can interact with your computer. Some web browsers will show an alert to be sure that you are aware that you are downloading this type of file. Download (Save button)
Let us assume that you select Save. Run options will be discussed later because Run is the shortcut for Save and Run. After you click Save you will see the dialog similar to the following
You may save the file into any folder you like. The most important is to remember and better write down what you save and where you save. In the image above it is assumed that you save yvrs.exe directly in your Windows desktop because it is the easiest place to find your download. Later you may move the installer to another folder. To switch to the Desktop it is enough to click the Desktop icon on the left pane. Download time may be very short for a broadband (cable, DSL) Internet connection. For the modem it may be 10 minutes and more. The most important is to wait until the completion of the download. The download completes when Download dialog either closes or shows "Download Complete" text. If the download fails for any reason just repeat it again.
If you cannot find the downloaded file
Click Start button in the Windows taskbar. Select Search and then "For File and Folders". Type the beginning of the file name. It may differ from the file name in the image below depending of the version. If you don't remember the file name simply type yvr in "All or part of the file name:" that is visible in the fragment below. Then click the Search button (not visible in the fragment). Wait until Windows find yvr. It may be rather long depending of number of files on your hard drive.
Checking for Viruses
It is better to check downloaded files for viruses before you run or open it. How to check depends on your antivirus software. In case of you have no antivirus software or reluctant to check I may assure you that I, naturally checked Your Voice Reminder for viruses before uploading, therefore when you download from my site http://www.friendly-ware.com/ there are actually no danger. To actually install Your Voice Reminder, run yvrs.exe. If you have selected Run when made choice between Save and Run earlier you would run yvrs.exe automatically after the download. Joining download and run gives you less opportunity to check the installer for viruses, though some antivirus programs check all downloads automatically. In the case of Your Voice Reminder, it does not matter mush because as it was written earlier it was checked and double-checked for viruses. After you click run you will see new regular Internet Explorer warning dialog
The most important thing in this dialog is Publisher: Vadim Motorine. If you see Vadim Motorine it means that
- Your Vice Reminder was not tampered.
- My identity, address etc. was checked by an independent trusted Authority.
I believe that primary goal of the warning at the bottom of the dialog above is to make the impressions that you may download only from Microsoft site and only Microsoft software. After all, you already use Microsoft Windows and may trust Microsoft. Right? Wrong. Before trust you should check and if you check you may trust. Microsoft understands it and to avoid legal consequences gives correct explanation but only deep in its Help.
If you have the patience to click through "What's the risk?" at the bottom of the dialog above and then explorer also all "Related Topics" in Microsoft Help you will finally find out from Microsoft itself that to be safe and trust you should in essence do only two things
- You should either check the software for viruses after download (but before you run the installer), or be sure that the publisher checked the software for you.
- Be sure that you see the publisher name in the Security Warning dialog when you run the installer for the first time. In our case Vadim Motorine.
As my mom told me, "this man smiles at you not because he likes you but because he tries to sell you his hot dogs". So Microsoft bothers about your security not because... Ok, enough for security, You have already checked my software. Just click Run.
