Really Safe Download and Installation of Software from Internet

If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) - first released August 2004 - 2006 you see the Security Warning about the publisher. I have signed my software with the digital signature for you to be sure that it is not tampered. Now you should see Vadim Motorine as the name of the publisher.

The warnings in the Security Warning dialog may frighten any novice and not only. I myself was frighten when first saw theses dialogs, by the way, downloading Microsoft software. However if you have patience to click through all Microsoft "What's the risk?" and then "Related Topics" you will finally find out in Microsoft Help that to be safe you should do in essence only two things

  • You should either check the software for viruses after download (but before you run the installer), or be sure that the publisher checked the software for you.
  • Be sure that you see the publisher name in the Security Warning dialog when you run the installer for the first time.
Why Microsoft hides these reasonable and widely known recommendations so deep in its help and prefer to frighten the users first, I do not know. I may only guess that it is Microsoft marketing trick to urge you download from Microsoft site only. As my mom told me, "this man smiles at you not because he likes you but because he tries to sell you his hot dogs". Microsoft now prefers to frighten rather than smile. New way of marketing, indeed.

However, would not it be better if a trusted independent company checked not only that the software of the publisher is free from viruses and malware but also that it smoothly installs, safe for you computer and does what it promises? Fortunately, such a company exits. It is SiteAdvisor. Your Voice Reminder was tested by them and found to be safe.

You may as well download Your Voice Reminder at CNET (download.com). CNET is download partner of Microsoft. If Microsoft trusts CNET, why should not you?
